Month of the Military Child

Creating a healthy family dynamic can be challenging. From busy schedules to constant bickering, it seems like anything can get in the way of cultivating a positive family threshold. ACS understands the importance of the Family unit, and this month, we are providing you with the information to create a fun, loving, and healthy household.

Communication

Communication plays a key role in creating a healthy Family structure. A Family environment can become chaotic when the Family unit lacks the ability to communicate efficiently. From understanding your children to speaking with your spouse, corresponding with your loved ones in a healthy manner can broaden the pathways of conversation.

Have you ever heard one of your children repeat a not-so-nice phrase that you have said before? As a parent, you are one of your kid’s primary role models. Therefore, it is imperative that you mirror the image you would like your child to portray. Speak positively around your children and act as a favorable example. The Family Advocacy Program encourages parents to understand their children.

First, give your kids the chance to completely communicate their point of view. Then, stop and listen to your kids when they are speaking. Try to create a quiet environment so they can communicate without distractions. As you begin to intertwine these communications tips into your daily conversations with your kids, they will begin to open up and create hearty discussion with their parents.

Not only do you have to worry about communicating with your kids, but you also must worry about divulging in healthy dialogue with your spouse. Intercommunication with your spouse also sets the tone for a constructive family communication structure. Read the five steps on how to communicate with your partner:

1. Stop and listen
2. Force yourself to hear.
3. Be open and honest with your partner.
4. Pay attention to nonverbal signals.
5. Stay focused in the here and now.

April is Month of the Military Child. In coordination with Healthy Families month, we would like to bring awareness to the impact being in a Military Family can have on a child.
